I’ve never followed any of those celebrity book clubs floating around, nor have I been a part of any actual book club where you meet actual people and discuss books. I just can’t see myself sitting there and inevitably ending up in some sort of an argument about some fictional character, or a subplot, or story line. My mild anxiety is already playing up just thinking about this.
Thank fuck, these celebrity book clubs don’t require actual face to face interactions, and there are quite a few out there I found rather interesting. I wanted to pick books recommended by celebrities I actually know, perhaps even like for some reason.
So, let’s take a look at the reading material, shall we?
The Road by Cormac McCarthy from Oprah’s Book Club
The author, Cormac McCarthy, was a new discovery for me last year. Of course I’ve heard of him before, but never actually picked up any of his books. Last December I read No Country for Old Men, and made a promise to read some of his other works too. His writing style is absolutely fascinating.
Watching Oprah is not something I do, but she’s one of those celebrities who uses her fame to try and do great things.
The Road is a super depressing post apocalyptic story about a father and son duo, who tracks across country with just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road. To be honest, it sounds awful, but I’m really curious how McCarthy’s style work for it.
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng from Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club
This book is about the secrets of motherhood, secret pasts and devastating 
obsessions, set in a peaceful Cleveland suburb.
I always loved stories set in small towns or suburbs, exploring the intricate relationship between its people, so when I first heard of this book last year, I knew I wanted to read it.
Reese Witherspoon is another favourite of mine. She was absolutely brilliant in Big Little Lies, a TV series that is based on one of my favourite books with the same title. Scrolling through her instagram I noticed we have quite a few books in common, so I have good feelings about this one.
After the Fire by Will Hill from Zoella Book Club
Until last summer I had no idea who (or what) Zoella was. When the name came up during one of many smoke breaks at work, I pretty much let it fly over my head. After I started my research for this prompt, I saw this book club is all bout YA fiction, and even though I’m old enough to have YA kid, I still enjoy these stories a lot.
After the Fire is set in Texas, and tells the story of Moon, who (along with her Brothers and Sisters) lives under the protection of Father John. They reside inside The Fence, and never talk about the Outside… Because Father John knows best. I’m getting some religious-nuts-vibes here, so this should be a good one.
The Marriage Pact by Michelle Richmond from Richard and Judy Book Club
Newlyweds Alice and Jake join an exclusive and mysterious group known 
only as The Pact. The goal of the Pact is simple: keep the marriage happy. The rules are straight forward: always answer your phone when your spouse calls, buy thoughtful gifts, plan a trip together every quarter. Never mention The Pact to anyone.
Fight Club for married people, basically.
Richard and Judy Book Club is a name I came across many times. I do love a good thriller, and they seem to recommend quite a few books from this genre.
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas from Our Shared Shelf, Emma Watson’s book club
Emma Watson started her book club (or shared shelf) in 2016, after she was appointed as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. Her book club features a great selection of feminist classics.
In The Hate U Give we get to meet Starr Carter, a teenage girl, who witnesses the fatal shooting of her best friend by a police officer. Did I mention she’s black? I guess now you know where I’m going with this…

I tried a book club once, not for me. They asked people to suggest a chick-Lit book. I suggested one and they agree to read it, following week they said it was too romantic and love-dovey (you asked for a chick-lit) and didn’t want to talk about it as it’s not their usual read – why ask for a chick-lit book then Grrr. After that I decided not to bother anymore.
I’ve read Little Fires Everywhere and The Hate You Give (which is an amazing book).

The Hate U Give is amazing!! I have no doubt it will remain my favorite for the year. I read The Road last year and I still think about it at least once a week. Even more with the current climate.

Oh, nice! I’m hearing a lot of positive things about the hate u give. Eventually i will read all of these, just need to find a way to be less distracted when it comes to reading.

I’m doing the POPSUGAR Reading Challenge too! My pick for this prompt is Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty from Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club. These books all sound really interesting, particularly Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng.

Loved Big Little Lies! That was my first book from Liane Moriarty and she quickly became a favourite ❤ Have you seen the series based on it? I thought it was pretty awesome too.

I normally stay away from celebrity book clubs because they turn out to be books that absolutely everyone is reading. I like to look for the books not everyone has seen yet 🙂 These look great, though!

I understand the sentiment 🙂 It’s only been recently that i started picking up “hyped up” books. I was always kind of wary that they will disappoint me. Main reason why i have never read Harry Potter, hehe 😀

Oh, i don’t think so! Everyone has a different insight into the same thing. I enjoy reading reviews on the same book from different people 🙂
I wouldn’t just read a book because everyone does, but if it’s something i really want to read, i will, even if it’s super popular.
Most books i’m interested in are actually not so popular, and i kind of wonder why 😀

I completely agree! The books I read are so amazing (I think) and I wonder why more people don’t read them lol. I should do a “If You Love This, Read This” post with some of my favorites that are like popular books lol.
