Monthly Catch Up #9 – September 2018

The days are getting shorter, the morning are getting crispier, and I sleep less than ever. The latter has probably nothing to do with season, but it did give me an excuse to read more this month. If I’m honest, I’d rather sleep, but we can’t have it all, can we? I’m back to seeing my therapist though, so hopefully this will get sorted soon. To my dismay he told me I should lay off my beloved thrillers and psychological suspense shit for a bit, because they might make my anxiety worse. But… But… It’s spooky season! So of course, I’ve been fretting over this now… Classic.

Another suggestion of his was to try new hobbies, so I decided to get into baking. By that I mean I made some pumpkin and cream cheese muffins last week and they turned out edible, so riding the wave of success I think I’m going to try a few more recipes I found via Carmen@ Busy Raising Wild Things.

My other obsession is chilli con carne, which is basically one of my signature dishes but I haven’t made it for quite a while. Now on the other hand, it’s pretty much on the menu every week. Too much? Well, I don’t think so!

This month I finished not one, but two series I started ages ago, and I’m about to complete a third one. Yay, me! Kathy never fails to come up with inspiring monthly topics, and her Sequel September was exactly the push I needed to get on with these books. I also read quite a few of my own books so all is going well! The best? No DNF this month, and I only hated one book out of 11 a little bit.

I’ve been saving up The Outsider by Stephen King since May. It’s just one of those books that are best be read under a blankie!

Also featuring my pumpkin cream cheese muffin!

Spud is a series I started years ago, and even though I had the last book forever, I never really felt like picking it up and putting an end to the teenage adventures. Now, halfway in the book I must say, it is not as good as the previous ones. While I couldn’t read the first book in public because people would have thought I’m a hysterical loony, this one only made me snort once, and I half smiled another time. What’s going on?

After an unexpected and diabolical farewell breakfast conversation with his father, Spud Milton returns to boarding school for his 1993 Matric year, his last as a schoolboy. Armed with a prefects’ tie and a raging libido, Spud soon discovers that being a large(ish) fish in a small pond has its fair share of challenges.
He finds himself embroiled in fighting for his own room, directing a house play where both lead actors refuse to learn their lines, and assisting in Vern Blackadder’s dramatic return from the dead with nothing more than a drip cord and a pair of oven gloves.
Amidst mounting pressure in the classroom and on the cricket field, Spud prepares to face down the most feared and dreaded challenge of them all – finding a date for the Matric dance.

OWNtober! Again, another brilliant prompt from Kathy. I’ve been going through my books and trying to refrain from buying anything new for a while. I think I’ll be fine. Have over 200 unread books!

Casserole time! No better excuse to make my favourite sausage and pumpkin dish that just screams autumn. It might even become the chilli of October. Or who knows? I might discover something new but just as delicious!

Yoga time! I haven’t been to the gym for two months now, because my back said “fuck you“, and right now I can’t even deadlift a bloody napkin. I’ve been to physio, got a few exercises and I’ll just add some yoga to it. According to my bestie that might even help with the sleep thing… Fingers crossed!

  1. I love making chili too, especially in autumn…best time for it! I like experimenting with different ways to make it too. I’m intrigued by a sausage and pumpkin variation!

    I always wonder how certain reading material might provoke anxiety too…I guess it can’t be a bad thing to focus elsewhere sometimes if there’s even a chance it might be negatively affecting you. Hope you’re back to getting some sleep soon!

  2. I am so happy to hear that your pumpkin cream cheese muffins came out edible. It’s is such a great feeling when that happens. 😁 Baking has always been very cathartic for me. 😊 Keep us posting on some of your other baking ventures.

  3. Those pumpkin muffins sound (and look) totally delicious. I used to love baking, but for some reason I never got the urge to do it for months. However as the colder months are coming I’m feeling more and more pulled to bake something. Muffins are always so easy and fun to make ❤ Best of luck with reading in October!

  4. Tis the season to bake, make hearty soul-warming food and yes, read! So get baking Sweetie, chilli it with the best of them, and start reading a few cosies mysteries to take the edge off the scary stuff, and above all else, relax.

    Great post, Norrie! Besides reading cooking is my favorite thing to do and I find it quiets the noise in my head when sometimes reading doesn’t. I hope that cooking will help you and you are able to sleep better.

  7. Too many of my friends have to slow down physically because of back issues to whatever exercise done wrong. Really unfortunate. Rest is usually the solution, but 2 months?! Man, I hope you find the cure to it and get back to deadlifting napkins. Maybe a box of tissues next. 😉 Happy reading!

  8. I find that books really keep me awake… especially the thrillers. But I mean that’s the point of them, right? You can’t put them down.
    Do you grow anything? This is the time of year to plan what to grow next year and it’s fun choosing and then planting. It’s become one of my non-book hobbies 🙂

    • Hmm, there might be something in that… i do feel sleepy when i read in the evening, but maybe it keeps my brain active… 😀

      Growing stuff sounds fun! I don’t have a garden tho, and those plants i kept indoors (i had mint, parsley, etc) they just died out so quickly :/

      • Probably the advice would be to listen to music, practice relaxation etc… but I can’t do that. I don’t get much chance to read during the day, so evening is my best time for it. Hmm you could try planting some spring bulbs, like mini daffodils, indoors, they can’t go wrong… I think 🙂

  10. Yoga is one of my favourite things and considering I hate any form of exercise that’s actually high praise! I hope it helps ease your back issues. I find there’s a few positions that are really good for helping with sleep as well. And chamomile tea is a treat for that too, I don’t know if you’ve tried that?

  11. I’ve been having so much trouble sleeping recently, too! And I used to be able to sleep with ease, those super awesome dreamless sleeps that are peaceful as heck. Now, when I do go to sleep? THERE’S ALWAYS A DREAM. While they’re not all nightmares, I hate having them. :/ Anyway, yoga sounds fun as well! I’ve tried it once, and I need to do it again soon!

    • Ooo, yess, the dreams!
      Was talking to my therapist and he keeps telling me very intense dreaming means there are unprocessed thoughts that we have not confronted while awake. He suggested i keep a journal and just write them down whenever they pop up. So far they don’t pop up while i’m awake… 😀

      Might worth a try for you as well. Guess writing stuff down can’t hurt. 🙂

  12. Aww, I feel you, I had over the roof anxiety this spring, and my therapist said no to depressive music and horror movies, which is basically my thing. She was right though, even though I enjoy stuff like that, it makes you feel worse indirectly, and it affects sleep. 🙄 I see you’re still reading what you want though, and I really want to get Outsider too hehe, can’t wait for your review! 😁 Those pumpkin cream cheese muffins sound heavenly! 🤤

  14. I’d take seriously what your therapist says. maybe branch out into some Barbara Cartland romances that’ll put you right to sleep 😀

    Cooking is a great hobby, if you have the patience for it. I don’t. Have you thought about putting up food posts here on your blog? When I was doing my Survival Saturday survival food posts (which I’m hoping to start again this month now that it is getting colder), they always spiked my view numbers. People like food 🙂
