What I Thought is a feature where I discuss books that never inspired me to do a full review, but yet fascinated me enough for some reason to want to share them with you.

The Honeymoon by Tina Seskis

Honeymoons are supposed to be a blissful time in a newlywed couple’s life. But imagine your significant other disappears. Not only that, but everyone is looking at you funny, and wonder what you did. Did I mention you don’t actually remember?

Well then… *rubs hands together*

Jemma’s perfect life shatters to pieces when her husband disappears one night while on a beautiful island in the Maldives. Twist after jaw dropping twist follows and the story gets crazier in every chapter. Who can Jemma even trust? Completely alone, under suspicion by not only the police but her husband’s family, the dream holiday soon turns into a disturbing nightmare.

A couple from the same hotel offers their support. But do they know more than they let on?

Guys, I was absolutely floored by this book. Had to scrape my jaw off the floor multiple times. The descriptions of the place were just utterly gorgeous too.5

Wedding planning is stressful, bridezillas are scary, but that’s nothing compared to finding the bridesmaid murder on the big day. Benji & Celeste’s celebration seems to be overshadowed by something else, other than the death of a close friend, and the killer is not the only one in the wedding party to hide  some dirty secrets.

It was my first Elin Hilderbrand book, and it was a lot of fun trying to get to the bottom of the case. It’s not a police procedural book, and while the murder itself plays a big part, the author focuses more on the people in the wedding party. All the lies and little deceptions that interlaces their relationship was so delicious and intriguing.

The resident hottie is Nick Diamantopoulos, the detective working closely with the local sheriff Ed Kapenash whose niece is also somehow involved in this mess. The mother of the groom, a famous mystery writer feels she’s adequately equipped to solve the case. At the end of the day she makes a living out of thinking up elaborate ways of getting rid of someone! Shooter, the best man is a famous womanizer, and looks like the obvious choice for prime suspect, but could it really be that simple?

Nantucket, where the story is set, sounds lovely by the way.4

Love at first sight and a whirlwind romance. That’s what happened to Paul and Rebecca, and now they have been married for twenty years. But when two women go missing and the police shows up on their doorstep, Rebecca suddenly sees her husband in a whole different light. She’s convinced her husband is about to walk away from everything they built together.

“I wouldn’t say that marriages are built on secrets, but they certainly help to sustain them.”

This really wasn’t as exciting as it was hyped up to be. Promised to be a slow burning thriller, but in fact is just too long and filled with repetitive stuff.ludgate-bookgif

So, we have two mysteries, a dodgy husband, and a woman playing amateur detective and fuck knows what else. Neither Paul nor Rebecca are nice people. You can say they really deserve each other. As the chapters alternate between the two of them, we get a nice picture of just how fucked up these two really are. Mind you, I did love this aspect, but would have loved it even more if it hadn’t been dragged out so much.

The two detectives, Silvestri & Wolcott were awesome though and their banter was entertaining as fuck.

“Silvestri reaches underneath the seat and produces the sack. He removes a jar and unscrews the lid, unleashing a wave of stench.
“Jesus, man. What went bad?”
“The cabbage.” He takes a bite and chews it slowly.
“I worry about you sometimes.”
“Don’t worry about me. I’m taking care of myself, brother. Want a bite?”
I recoil. “Good God, man. No.”
“It’s just kimchi. It’s fermented.”
“I know what kimchi is. You’re a fan, huh?”
“Fuck no. It’s terrible. But it’s great for your gut. Probiotics.””

  5. Haven’t tried Kimchi but that dialogue now makes me think of cabbages gone bad 😀 Great reviews Norrie. I have to read Honeymoon. It sounds like my kind of stuff.

  8. Hahaha I’m glad you had a blast with the first two books! I have to say you really made me curious about The Honeymoon – if a book can leave your jaw floored, I want to read it xD
    Also, kimchi is disgusting. But hey, your gut will thank you, I guess!

      I looove kimchi and sauerkraut too! Haven’t really seen the benefits of it on my health, but hey, i just eat it for the flavour. (Not for the smell, cuz let’s be frank, it’s gross)
